Knox & Clayton Award for First Major Project in England  JUNE 12 2008

A top Northern Ireland architectural practice has been nominated for a clutch of awards for its first ever major project in England.

Knox & Clayton of Lisburn recently completed the award-winning mixed use retail and residential development Fountain Court in Teignmouth, Devon.

Despite a complex planning system which presented the local team with challenges from start to finish, the scheme was singled out by the Devon Building Control Partnership for a Highly Commended award in its recent Quality and Sustainability Awards 2008.

Last week it was further short listed for both Best Commercial Extension/Alteration and Best Multiple Housing Site in the coverted Local Authority Building Control South West Region Qualtiy Awards.

Devon Building Control Partnership noted during the award ceremony that Knox & Clayton were very easy to work with given that they were operating from Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

Sited between two busy streets in Teignmouth’s main shopping precinct and bounded on both sides by existing retail and residential properties, the development offered some unique problems for the Northern Ireland team from inception to completion.

Situated within a Conservation Area, it involved the retention of three ground floor retail units including a Grade II Listed facade, the replacement of two ground floor retail units and the construction of 15 one bedroom residential units accessed via a central courtyard.

Following a lengthy and highly debated planning period, which included consultations with Local Council Conservationists regarding the style of the design, the project build got underway in October 2006.
